The xequerê, or shekere, (pron: shake-uh-ray) is originally from West Africa, and is a staple of African and Afro-Brazilian music. It is played by shaking it and/or hitting it against the hand. Learning to play it is a piece of cake — learning to play it WELL and bring out the range of tone this deceptively simple instrument is capable of is a whole different story.
Every xequere has a different sound — it relates to the size and quality of the gourd, the size of the weave of the beads, and how closely the weave fits the gourd. We want to help you find the right xequere for you, so click the links below to listen before choosing.
